Features and Benefits

Accuracy, Versatility, and Reliability Like No Other

As an engineer, you need a 3D printer that you can count on. With the UltiMaker S5, this is no problem. UltiMaker seems to only make FDM 3D printers that are reliable and highly versatile. You can handle all of your plastics manufacturing with a single 3D printer. Plus, it helps that the UltiMaker S5 offers some of the best printing accuracy on the market. In other words, this one printer can keep up with your production schedule and create engineer-quality parts.

Make Intricate Parts

One of the best aspects of the UltiMaker S5 is that you can make incredibly intricate parts with it. This goes back to the accuracy and precision of the machine, but it also includes the fact that this high-quality printer has a second extruder.

  • Use water-soluble supports. The UltiMaker S5 can use supports that dissolve in water, allowing your part to have an incredible surface finish.
  • Embed parts in a paused print. You can also pause your print and insert objects like bolts, existing assemblies, or nuts to be encased in plastic for better functionality.
  • More design freedom. With the UltiMaker S5, you don’t have to worry about the machinability of your parts, which gets rid of a lot of design constraints you previously had.

Very Easy to Use

Using the UltiMaker S5 is incredibly easy. Someone with no prior 3D printing experience can follow the prompts on the touchscreen and create high-quality parts with no hassle.

  • Great user interface. The UltiMaker S5 has won awards for the usability of its touchscreen, and the prompts on the screen make each printing operation very easy.
  • Start a print with one touch. You can start a new print with a single button, or you can start it remotely with this IoT-enabled 3D printer.
  • Automatic calibration and leveling. You don’t have to worry about perfectly leveling the build plate, since the UltiMaker S5 does all of these startup tasks automatically.

A Versatile Option

Most engineers are also looking for a 3D printer that can tackle a wide range of projects. The UltiMaker S5 can do exactly that. It offers a lot of versatility, which makes the whole process easier for your department.

  • Use 280+ material options. More material options allow you to hand-pick the final look, quality, and performance of your parts.
  • A bigger build volume. With a generous 330 x 240 x 300 mm build volume, you can get more done with each print.
  • Make multi-material parts. With two extruders, you can weave two materials together in a single print, maximizing the material properties of your parts.

More About This Technology

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most common forms of 3D printing, and it’s largely used by hobbyists and DIYers. It has a special place in industrial settings as a low-cost way to make presentable 3D parts. You might use an FDM printer to create a scaled model home, an aesthetic representation of the final part, or a non-load-bearing component.

FDM works through an extruder on an XYZ (3-axis) gantry. Solid plastic is pushed against a hot nozzle which turns the plastic molten. The molten plastic is then carefully applied to the bed of your 3D printer. The 3-axis gantry will move around in X and Y, drawing a single layer of your 3D model. When it’s done, the nozzle will move up in the Z direction and create a new layer directly on top of the previously-extruded layer. This process continues until your full 3D-printed part is completed.

FDM printers are not used for load-bearing applications due to the weakness of the plastic material, and the weak points between each layer of the print. Even a small cyclic load can easily cause failure between layers.

You might find FDM-printed parts in the aerospace, medical, and consumer goods industries.
