3D Printer

UltiMaker S3

The UltiMaker S3 is the smallest sibling in the S family from UltiMaker. If you didn’t know, the S line of FDM 3D printers is an industry-preferred option across the board. The whole lineup is affordable, incredibly powerful, accurate, and able to keep up with the demands of your full-scale engineering department.

If you ask anyone who knows about 3D printing, they’ll recognize the UltiMaker S3 for exactly what it is: a workhorse of a 3D printer. Though this printer has the smallest build volume, it has all of the S-specific features that you would expect: a high-temperature hotend, automatic bed leveling, impressive dual extruder, and award-winning touchscreen UI.

Thanks to these generous features of the UltiMaker S3, it can print with over 190 materials. Why does this matter? Well, it allows you to hand-pick the final characteristics of every part that you 3D print. Each material option comes with its own material properties, thermal properties, and aesthetics.

You can use the UltiMaker S3 to print anything from fun gold flake-embedded parts to structurally-reinforced carbon fiber parts, and everything in between. For engineering departments, this means tackling a wider range of projects with a single machine.

The UltiMaker S3 hotend pops out simply for quick change-overs before parts. The calibration and parameter setup is largely automatic, saving you time between each print. All-in-all, this printer is a great option for engineering departments who are okay with a 230 x 190 x 200 mm build volume.

Features and Benefits

Accuracy, Versatility, and Reliability Like No Other

If you couldn’t tell by our raving review, UltiMaker is a great brand to buy from. The UltiMaker S3 has the same accuracy, reliability, and versatility that have become staples for every product on UltiMaker’s brochure. Their lineup of S printers allows you to get perfect results every time with every little hassle. This 3D printer is an option that can sit in a dusty corner of your engineering offices and still work perfectly well. All the while, it achieves accuracies and precision that you can’t find elsewhere at the same price point.

Make Precision Parts

One thing that the UltiMaker S3 excels at is making high-precision parts. In 3D printing, this is reliant on the sturdiness of the framework, the precision of the motors, and the brains powering the operation. Of course, the UltiMaker S3 excels in all three of these categories.

  • Accuracies as low as 2.5 micron. With tighter accuracies, you can have more assurance that each part will meet your tolerance specs and be dimensionally stable.
  • Tiny minimum layer thicknesses. A small layer thickness allows you to include more detail in each part and achieve a smoother (or more textured) surface finish, as desired.
  • Exceptional part finishes. With the precision of the UltiMaker S3, you can skip all of the finishing steps and still achieve beautiful parts.

Save Time on Each Print

The UltiMaker S3 is a consistent way to save time on every part that you make. It has a number of sensors and features that can help you avoid problems while speeding up the turnaround time of each part.

  • No supervision required. The UltiMaker S3 can run with zero supervision, allowing your engineers to work on other projects while your parts are being made.
  • Quick startup and part finalization. Starting and removing a part on the UltiMaker S3 is one of the simplest experiences, especially compared to other 3D printers. By doing this faster, you can make a whole batch of parts in record time.
  • Material change-over is a breeze. Changing from one material to the next can be done within 5 minutes, dramatically cutting down your part lead times.

The Easiest Way to Fab

Using the UltiMaker S3 opens a new door to fabrication. It simplifies all of the difficult parts of FDM 3D printing, and it gives you confidence in your parts. We would argue that the UltiMaker S3 is one of the easiest ways to fabricate plastic parts in low volumes.

  • Print from a wide range of materials. With over 190 materials at your disposal, you can fine-tune the qualities of your finished parts.
  • No prior experience required. Someone with no 3D printing experience can use the UltiMaker S3 with ease, thanks to its helpful touchscreen and simplified workflow.
  • One-touch print initialization. With an .STL file, you can start printing in exactly one touch. Plus, you can start prints remotely to make things even easier.

More About This Technology

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most common forms of 3D printing, and it’s largely used by hobbyists and DIYers. It has a special place in industrial settings as a low-cost way to make presentable 3D parts. You might use an FDM printer to create a scaled model home, an aesthetic representation of the final part, or a non-load-bearing component.

FDM works through an extruder on an XYZ (3-axis) gantry. Solid plastic is pushed against a hot nozzle which turns the plastic molten. The molten plastic is then carefully applied to the bed of your 3D printer. The 3-axis gantry will move around in X and Y, drawing a single layer of your 3D model. When it’s done, the nozzle will move up in the Z direction and create a new layer directly on top of the previously-extruded layer. This process continues until your full 3D-printed part is completed.

FDM printers are not used for load-bearing applications due to the weakness of the plastic material, and the weak points between each layer of the print. Even a small cyclic load can easily cause failure between layers.

You might find FDM-printed parts in the aerospace, medical, and consumer goods industries.
